Mary Albes, resident of the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home at Paramus, New Jersey, is one of the 10 residents at the Home who recently marked their 100th, and in one case, 105th birthday, Feb. 29, 2024. In 1941, Albes began working for the U.S. Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. as a Secretary. In 1943, she enlisted in the Marine Corps and rose to the rank of sergeant by the end of World War II. The four men and six women each received a signed letter and coin from Maj. Gen. Lisa J. Hou, D.O., The Adjutant General of New Jersey, as well as certificates of commendation from Bergen County and the Bergen County Board of Commissioners. (New Jersey National Guard photo by Mark C.
