Biologists from the Rivers Project, working with the Missouri Department of Conservation, regularly monitor fish in the Mississippi River. They embed acoustic tags by making a small incision in the fish’s abdominal cavity and inserting the tube-like tag. These tags emit acoustic “pings” that are picked up by specialized receivers. This allows the biologists to track the movements of the fish, as the receivers process these sounds to identify when a fish carrying a specific acoustic tag enters the reception area, providing information on the fish’s travel history.
