Rivers Project biologists, in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation, regularly monitor fish on the Mississippi River. They implant acoustic tags in the fish by making a small incision in the abdominal cavity, inserting the tube-like tag, and then suturing the incision with three absorbable sutures. This entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes, is carefully performed to minimize stress and harm the fish.
