Rivers Project biologists, in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Conservation, regularly monitor fish on the Mississippi River. They embed acoustic tags by making a small incision in the fish’s abdominal cavity to insert the tube-like device, then closing with incision with three absorbable sutures. This entire procedure, which takes approximately 10 minutes, is carefully performed to minimize stress and harm to the fish. These tags help track the fish’s movements and gather crucial data for conservation efforts.
