An employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, Walla Walla District, examines a blueprint during powerhouse operations at McNary Lock and Dam, April 17. Modernization efforts are underway at the dam to include designing and installing new high efficiency, fish-friendly turbine runners, replacing powerhouse systems and uprating the power generating capacity. McNary Lock and Dam's 14 hydroelectric turbines are currently capable of producing a total of 980 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power 686,000 homes. McNary’s navigation lock allows commercial and recreational access to the Inland Pacific Northwest.
