Daniel Kranz (right), an Electrical Engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District, leads a tour at McNary Lock and Dam to contractors from the Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office and members of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory at McNary Lock and Dam, April 17. The group learned about the dam’s modernization efforts, which includes designing and installing new high efficiency, fish-friendly turbine runners, replacing powerhouse systems and uprating the power generating capacity. McNary’s 14 hydroelectric turbines are currently capable of producing a total of 980 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power 686,000 homes. McNary’s navigation lock allows commercial and recreational access to the Inland Pacific Northwest.
