An Air Medal hangs from the lapel of Connecticut Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 3 Nicholas Arsenault’s Army Aircrew Combat Uniform, or A2CU, during a welcome home ceremony held inside the Governor William A. O’Neill Armory, Hartford, Connecticut, April 20, 2024. The Air Medal, established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt through Executive Order 9158 on May 11, 1942, was originally presented for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. The criteria for earning the medal differed depending on the theater of operations and duties performed by the pilot or aircrew. Currently, the medal is awarded to U.S. Army aircrews for every six months of meritorious service while performing flight-related duties in a combat zone. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Matthew Lucibello)
