A yield of aircraft wreckage sits in a screen during a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recovery mission in Papua New Guinea, Aug. 23, 2024. Once a recovery team begins excavation, the scientific recovery expert analyses the results of each unit to determine how far too dig and when to move on. In this case, total yields of aircraft wreckage were used to determine which units possibly contained incident-related material. There are approximately 72,000 missing personnel from WWII.
