A U.S. Soldier comes up for air during a surface swim as part of the Maritime Assessment Course (MAC) on Camp “Bull” Simons, Florida, Sept. 19-20, 2024. The surface swim is a nonstop 500 meter swim, using only the breaststroke or sidestroke, that must be completed within 1 hour and 30 minutes. Students who attended the two-week course were tested on a variety of skills including weight belt training, equipment recovery, dive supervision pre-inspection, and U.S. Navy drown proofing techniques of hand bound, travel, bobbing, mask retrieval, and floating. The MAC, formerly known as "pre-scuba," is a prerequisite course that physically and mentally prepares Soldiers for the rigors of the Combat Diver Qualification Course. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt.
