Gil Sanborn, left, civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army, honors U.S. Coast Guard Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Joseph Rivas, from San Fernando Valley, California, during an Honoring our Heroes ceremony for San Francisco Fleet Week 2024 at Marina Green park in San Francisco Oct. 11, 2024. During a daily commute, Rivas found a cyclist with severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle. Rivas immediately stabilized the victim with the help of a Navy Corpsman and facilitated the communication to first-responders and the control of the scene. SFFW, now in its 43rd iteration, is a time-honored sea service celebration that allows citizens of the Bay Area to witness today’s maritime capabilities firsthand. Nearly 2,500 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen will showcase their capabilities and equipment, participate in various community service events, and enjoy the hospitality of the Bay Area during the event.
