Gil Sanborn, left, civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army, honors U.S. Naval Aircrewman (Helicopter) 1st Class Jonathan Kangas, from Newberry, Michigan, during an Honoring our Heroes ceremony for San Francisco Fleet Week 2024 at Marina Green park in San Francisco Oct. 11, 2024. On Saturday Apr. 20, 2024, during Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape training on Naval Air Station North Island, Kangas responded to a nearby automotive crash and coordinated scene-control, first-aide and medical evacuation efforts for the accident victim. SFFW, now in its 43rd iteration, is a time-honored sea service celebration that allows citizens of the Bay Area to witness today’s maritime capabilities firsthand. Nearly 2,500 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen will showcase their capabilities and equipment, participate in various community service events, and enjoy the hospitality of the Bay Area during the event.
