U.S. Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Jeremiah Lavieri, center-left, the communications chief of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, serving as the most senior Marine, passes the ceremonial cake to Lance Cpl. Shawn Pinkham, a supply administrative specialist with the 31st MEU, serving as the youngest Marine, during the 31st MEU’s Marine Corps Birthday Ball, at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Nov. 2, 2024. The passing of the ceremonial cake symbolizes the passing of wisdom and Marine Corps traditions onto the next generation of Marines. Marines and Sailors joined spouses, friends and fellow service members across units to celebrate the 249th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premiere crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region. Lavieri is a native of Wayne, Michigan, and Pinkham is a native of Rochester, New York. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Christopher Lape)
