Lance Cpl. Christopher L. Riley, instructor for the M-16 A2 Service Rifle Maintainer's Course, small arms repair technician, Maintenance Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, walks an Iraqi soldier through the step-by-step process of clearing the M-16 A2 service rifle. The M-4 carbine was also part of the instruction. Ten Iraqi soldiers were selected by their command to go through this course, making them the first to participate in the RMC for their unit. As an incentive to complete the course, the soldiers were given armorer's tools that were specially made for them in order to perform their new jobs. This three-day course was developed because of a need for Iraqi soldiers to learn how to maintain the weapons they receive from U.S. forces. The objective is for these soldiers to become armorers for their units and share the knowledge they received from the Marines.
