U.S. Army CPT Abimael Rivera, the battalion Intelligence officer of 2nd Cavalry Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, holds his stick rifle, writing the serial number of his weapon “W112TH” as a part of the traditional spur ride held in Bemowo Piskie Training Area, Poland, October 24, 2024. The Spur Ride is a long-standing Cavalry tradition for candidates to earn their way into the Order of the Spur. The ride consisted of over 20 miles of rucking, 10 intellectually and physically demanding testing lanes, and intense corrective training. During the ride, soldiers carried an array of items on themselves to replicate sensitive items, to instill the practice of never leaving their s.i. for adversaries to capture. These items ranged from fragile eggs symbolizing the fragile glass of night optical/observation devices, sticks or toy swords as the long, and light M4 Carbines, and larger items, such as rocking horses, to demonstrate the larger bulk of other weapons systems like Javelins, .50 Caliber Rifles, and radios. The 1st Cavalry Division’s mission is to engage in multinational training and exercises across the continent, strengthening interoperability with NATO allies and regional security partners, which provides competent and ready forces to V Corps, America’s forward-deployed corps in Europe.
