U.S. Army Cpl. Angel Lewis, a signals support specialist, attached to Bravo ‘Bad Bet’ Company, 2nd Cavalry Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, assists a Romanian ally with learning how to shoot an azimuth for the land navigation portion of the traditional spur ride held in Bemowo Piskie Training Area, Poland, October 24, 2024. The Spur Ride is a long-standing Cavalry tradition for candidates to earn their way into the Order of the Spur. The ride consisted of over 20 miles of rucking, 10 intellectually and physically demanding testing lanes, and intense corrective training. Land Navigation is vital for all soldiers to know, as an inability to traverse through terrain could endanger soldiers, assets, and the mission. The 1st Cavalry Division’s mission is to engage in multinational training and exercises across the continent, strengthening interoperability with NATO allies and regional security partners, which provides competent and ready forces to V Corps, America’s forward-deployed corps in Europe.
