Crowds gather to witness the christening of the USNS Montford Point at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, March 2. The vessel was named after the first black Marines to officially be accepted into Marine Corps recruit training in 1942. The USNS Montford Point, the first mobile landing platform ship in its class, will allow Marines and naval forces access to almost anywhere within reach of the ocean via aircraft or landing craft air-cushioned hovercraft vehicle.
