HALAWA, Hawaii (Oct. 31, 2024) Soil core samples were taken from a drilling rig at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility (RHBFSF) in Halawa, Hawaii, Oct. 31, 2024. Studying the soil core samples allows experts an advanced understanding of subsurface conditions, which helps inform future cleanup and sampling. Established by the Department of the Navy as a commitment to the community and the environment, Navy Closure Task Force-Red Hill (NCTF-RH) is charged with the safe decommissioning of the facility and continues to engage with the people of Hawaii, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders as it safely and deliberately decommissions the RHBFSF.
