Christy Jones, the acting regional programs director for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, walks with Maj. Gen. Mark Quander, the division commander, and Col. Nicholas Melin, the Pittsburgh District Commander, during a visit along the Monongahela River near Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, Dec. 9, 2024. The Pittsburgh District demolished a fixed-crest dam to open a navigation channel on the Monongahela River and will remove the locking facility associated with the dam beginning in 2025.
The Pittsburgh District’s area of responsibility covers 26,000 square miles, which includes 23 locks and dams on 328 miles of navigable waterways and 16 multi-purpose flood-control reservoirs. During his visit, Quander toured navigation projects on the lower Monongahela River, which highlighted advancements in infrastructure and remote operations, and recognized the efforts of Pittsburgh District employees.
