Alan Nogy, the locks and dams branch chief for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, gives a tour to Maj. Gen. Mark Quander, the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division commander, and senior leaders of the John P. Murtha Locks and Dam during a visit in Monessen, Pennsylvania, Dec. 9, 2024.

Construction for the John P. Murtha began in 2004 and took 20 years to complete. The project modernized the facility by replacing an older, smaller chamber with a new one measuring 720 feet long by 84 feet wide. The construction also included a control tower with state-of-the-art systems and the potential to remote-control other facilities in the future. The new chamber expands the facility’s capacity to support commercial navigation throughout the region and the nation.

The Pittsburgh District’s area of responsibility covers 26,000 square miles, which includes 23 locks and dams on 328 miles of navigable waterways and 16 multi-purpose flood-control reservoirs. During his visit, Quander toured navigation projects on the lower Monongahela River, which highlighted advancements in infrastructure and remote operations, and recognized the efforts of Pittsburgh District employees.
