(March 31, 2025) On display during the Navy Department Library's 225th Anniversary is a brass plaque from 1982 that commemorated the occasion when President John Adams directed the first Secretary of the Navy, Benjamin Stoddert, to establish a naval library. Today, the library's collection consists of 114,000 book titles, 374,000 manuscripts, and 189,000 periodicals, emphasizing naval, nautical, and military history, including foreign navies.
