Gunnery Sgt. Michael L. Kufchak and his wife, Barbara, attend a Marine Corps birthday ball in 1998. Kufchak served as the Bravo Company gunnery sergeant with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. Barbara, a native of Santa Ana, Calif., completed both active and reserve service in the U.S. Army. Kufchak is currently the 1st Marine Division sergeant major. Together, they raised two foster children, Stephanie Romero and Dee Mendez.
