Mineman 3rd Class Phillip Sweet, of Eagle Point, Ore., explains the capabilities of a mine neutralization vehicle (MNV) to Senior Chief Gunner's Mate James Cahill, of Walhalla, S.C., aboard USS Dextrous (MCM 13). The ship, one of four mine warfare ships forward deployed in the U.S. Naval Central Command area of responsibility, employs mine hunting, sweeping and neutralization capabilities in support of maritime security operations (MSO). MSO sets the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons, or other material.
