USS Dextrous (MCM 13) commanding officer Lt. Cmdr. Jeffery A. Bennett II sits on deck outside of the bridge of the ship. The ship, one of four mine warfare ships forward deployed in the U.S. Naval Central Command area of responsibility, employs mine hunting, sweeping and neutralization capabilities in support of maritime security operations (MSO). MSO sets the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons, or other material. Dextrous recently completed a four-month dry dock period, from March to July, for maintenance. Millions of dollars were spent to repair a rudder, replace wood from the bow, repaint the hull, clean the ship and make a few minor repairs. The biggest job was changing out one of the ship's engines.
