Sergeant Phillip Whitener, an assistant platoon sergeant serving with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, collected donations from various military families and local businesses for the families in and around Moore, Okla., and Oklahoma City, affected by the tornadoes during the week of May 20. Whitener, a native of Polk County, Ark., credited his wife, Christina, with passing information about donations through the Internet to families and volunteers.
