Hawijah's Chief of Reconstruction from the Hawijah City Council tells the Sons of Iraq attending their first day of Iraq's pilot literacy program in the Hawijah District, June 15, that "they are being given a gift ... the opportunity to read and write." He told the some 60 in attendance, that what they would learn in the next four months will change their lives for the better." Four schools opened, one each in the four sub-districts of Hawijah, which will teach over 500 SOI over a four-month period how to read and write so that they can transition into the Iraq security forces. Both the Iraq police and army require a candidate to be able to read and fill out the application to qualify for consideration.
