The Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection and Beach Renourishment Project widened the beach from 15th to 70th streets. As part of the work, contractors dredged sand from the ocean floor and piped it several miles onto the Virginia Beach shoreline. This is the first renourishment cycle since the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed the hurricane protection beach renourishment project in 2001.
