Contractors bulldoze dredged sand piped in from the ocean floor Feb. 1, 2013. The work is part of the Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection and Beach Renourishment Project and is the first renourishment since the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed the project in 2001. The $143-million storm protection project in 2001 included spanning the original boardwalk, adding pump stations, seawall improvements and sand replenishment.
