URUZGAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan - The deconstruction of Forward Operating Base (FOB) Hadrian as part of the transition process in Uruzgan Province is on schedule to be complete in the coming months.
Site remediation for the base, which is 60km west of Tarin Kot near the town of Deh Rawud, has entered the final stages with most of the equipment and structures now removed.
FOB Hadrian will be the last coalition base to be deconstructed in Uruzgan Province, signalling a major milestone in the transition to Afghan responsibility.
Gunners from the U.S. Army’s 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery will continue to provide offensive support to Combined Team Uruzgan (CTU) missions using M777A2 howitzers until the base has drawn down.
Col. Simon Stuart, commander CTU, was updated on the progress of FOB Hadrian’s deconstruction on May 30 by Capt. John W. Erwin, FOB Hadrian’s officer-in-charge, and the US Army engineers responsible for the closure of the base.
Stuart said he was impressed by the engineers’ progress.
“We are on schedule to have the base closed in the coming months with all safety, environmental and security requirements being met,” he said.
“The Afghan soldiers based in Deh Rawud have moved next door to FOB Tycz, and are maintaining district security along with the Afghan National Police.”
Initially a Dutch base until their withdrawal in 2010, Australian Mentoring Teams worked out of FOB Hadrian training and patrolling with the 1st Kandak of the 4th Brigade until it achieved operational independence in November 2012.
Engineers from the 7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment Task Group, conducted works to remove infrastructure between December and January this year.
