    SILVER SPRING, Md. (NNS) - Capt. Adam W. Armstrong was relieved as commander, Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) by Capt. William M. Denison during a ceremony held at the Daniel K. Inouye Building on June 18.

    The ceremony was presided by Rear Adm. Tim Weber, commander, Naval Medical Forces Pacific.

    Armstrong, a graduate of Emory University and the University of South Florida joined the Navy in 1996. He assumed command of NMRC in 2017 where he was responsible for eight laboratories across the Navy’s medical research and development enterprise. While in command, NMRC developed two vaccines and two therapeutics, while leading the Navy’s medical research efforts. For his service, he was awarded his second Legion of Merit award.

    This has been a great tour and despite the circumstances within the last year, I got to travel around the globe and experience things that I never imagined being commander,” said Armstrong.

    In keeping with naval heritage, the officers each read their orders and after a short exchange of salutes, authority and responsibility was transferred.

    Denison, a graduate of the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale joined the Navy in 1996. He rejoins NMRC, where he was Armstrong’s executive officer from 2017 to 2019. Denison’s previous tour was as the commanding officer for Naval Health Research Center.

    “I’ve had great pleasure working with Capt. Armstrong for the past four years. As we both start our new ventures, I will continue to push forward do the tremendous work as commander for NMRC, ”said Denison.

    NMRC is a premier research organization with the vision of world-class, operationally relevant health and medical research solutions.

    NMRC support’s the Department of the Navy with research in infectious diseases, biological warfare detection and defense, combat casualty care, environmental health concerns, aerospace and undersea medicine, medical modeling, simulation and operational mission support, and epidemiology and behavioral sciences.
