Capt. David Thornton, chaplain for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-121st Infantry Regiment, prays before submerging Staff Sgt. Von Nunes of Delta Company, 1-121st in a baptism ceremony in a creek behind their encampment at the eXportable Combat Training Capabilities (XCTC). “It just felt like the right time,” said Nunes. Staff Sgt. Nunes is a mortarman for Delta Company and a squad leader. “I’m thankful to have the support of my chain of command and the soldiers from my unit and the international contingent,” he said. Infantrymen from Scotland’s 7th Battalion Royal Regiment Highlanders were on hand to witness Nunes’ impromptu baptism. Scottish and Canadian soldiers are participating in XCTC and will conduct joint force exercises throughout September.
