Members of the crowd listen to Thomas Schmid, mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Jan. 13 during a New Year's reception at the Kongresshall in downtown Garmisch. Schmid and retired US Army Lt. Gen. Keith W. Dayton, the Director of the joint US-German George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch, spoke to about 800 community leaders and others from the surrounding area in a ceremony that included music from the German Gebirgsmusikkorps. The Marshall Center has been in Garmisch for more than two decades and it's the German-American partnership between has existed since 1994.
