Chief Warrant Officer Robert Vaughn, Battalion Aviation Life Support officer with the 1-189th gives Spc. Ace Seilstad, CH-47 Chinook helicopter mechanic with Delta Company 1-189th, pointers on how to properly launch a flare during a signaling devices class during a cold weather survival training exercise held on top of McDonald Pass in January. Soldiers were trained on various items found in the aviation survival kit know as the Aircraft Module Survival System. Along with several signaling devices, the kit includes enough food and water for three people for at least 72 hours, shelters, knives, firestarting kits, first aid equipment and a range of other survival tools.
