Rct. Yadelsy Ortiz, a 20-year-old native of Hollywood, Fla., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Ortiz is training with Platoon 4030, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Sept. 5, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps to better myself and my future,” said Ortiz. “I didn’t see college working out, and I wanted to provide support for my mother and sisters. I’ve been thinking about joining for the past three years, and I finally just committed to it.” Ortiz graduated from Hollywood Hills High School in 2012. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
