Rct. Baleria Villarreal, a 19-year-old native of Edinburg, Texas, is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Villarreal is training with Platoon 4031, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Sept. 5, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps to pursue my further dream of becoming a U.S. Marshal,” said Villarreal. “I was raised by my grandfather, a Vietnam [veteran], and from an early age, I’ve lived by honor, courage and commitment. I felt that I could serve my country and make my grandfather proud while doing what I had to do so the people I love could do what they wanted to do.” Villarreal graduated from Edinburg North High School in 2012. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
