Capt. Thom W. Burke, commanding officer of the amphibious command ship USS Blue Ridge and crew are on a tour of a village under the care of Gawad Kalinga by program director Ed Mabuti. Gawad Kalinga is an organization that provides shelter, medical treatment, education, and job skills to needy families. U.S. and Philippine navy Sailors as well as members of the local community are helping to build a low-income multi-tenant unit for poor families as part of a community service project. Blue Ridge serves under Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 7/Task Force 76, the Navy's only forward deployed amphibious force.
