Using a large scale imaging system an imagery analyst with the California National Guard Counterdrug Task Force continues his evaluation while another analyst alerts a Border Patrol agent they’ve identified a possible abnormality that needs further investigation. Developed by San Diego-based Special Agent In Charge, the imagery unit consists of a truck-mounted, non-intrusive gamma ray imaging system that produces radiographic images used in the evaluation of the contents of trucks, containers, cargo, and passenger vehicles to determine the possible presence of many types of contraband. Counterdrug personnel operate MVISs at checkpoints throughout Southern California. A Guardsman operating the MVIS software scans numerous vehicles each day and must quickly identify signs of potentially illegal or dangerous goods. The machines are highly mobile—service members can react to a call to change locations and be on the road within 15 minutes. National Guard personnel complete a two week, hands on training course on the proper operation and capabilities of the MVIS system. (U.S. Army National Guard Photo/ Sgt. 1st Class Benjamin M.
