Pvt. 1st Class John Miccio, 51st Expeditionary Signal Battalion computer information specialist, prepares to remove an intravenous fluid fusion attached to Airman 1st Class Edward Bailey, 332nd Expeditionary Security Force Squadron security forces member, as Army Spc. Sarah Gass, 699th Maintenance Company track-wheel mechanic, prepares medical tape, following a mass casualty exercise held here at the Jameson Combat Medic Training Center March 4. Participation in the exercise was necessary for students in order to receive their CLS certification. Once certified, combat lifesaver certified servicemembers are trained to provide immediate care, administer IV fluids to control shock, and perform needle chest decompression for a casualty with tension pneumothorax. A tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening condition that results from a progressive deterioration and worsening of a simple pneumothorax, collapsed lung. Miccio is deployed here from Fort Lewis Wash., and is a Westhapton Beach , N.Y. native. Bailey is deployed here from Kadena Air Base, Japan, and is a native of Waterbury, Conn. Gass is deployed here from Fort Irwin, Calif., and is a native of Dearborn Heights, Mich.
