Senior Airman Steven Slocum, 332nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron security forces member deployed here from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, prepares to insert a nasopharyngeal airway into the nasal passage of Staff Sgt. Crystal Mims, 332nd ESFS security forces member deployed from Travis AFB, Calif., and fellow Combat Life Saver Course student on March 2. Performing an NPA was a skill required for course students to receive their CLS certification. Students were required to both administer and receive an NPA on each other. Once CLS-certified, servicemembers are trained to provide immediate care, administer IV fluids to control shock, and perform needle chest decompression for a casualty with tension pneumothorax. A tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening condition that results from a progressive deterioration and worsening of a simple pneumothorax, collapsed lung.
