Staff Sgt. Dilia Ayala, 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs specialist, initiates a Saline Lock and intravenous infusion on Army Spc. Jessica Gemmell, 699th Maintenance Company light wheel mechanic, during the Combat Life Saver Course held at the Jameson Combat Medic Training Center here March 4. The CLS course is a bridge between the self-aid/buddy-aid (first aid) training given to all Soldiers during basic training and the medical training given to an Army combat medic. CLS training is given to non-medical servicesmembers providing them with life-saving skills. Once certified, combat lifesaver certified servicemembers are trained to provide immediate care, administer IV fluids to control shock, and perform needle chest decompression for a casualty with tension pneumothorax. A tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening condition that results from a progressive deterioration and worsening of a simple pneumothorax, collapsed lung. Ayala is currently deployed from Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo, and is a native of El Paso, Texas. Gemmell is currently deployed here from Fort Irwin, Calif., and is a native of Alamogordo, N.M.
