Army Spc. Jessica Gemmell, 699th Maintenance Company light wheel mechanic, simulates being a combat casualty during a mass casualty exercise as part of the Combat Life Saver Course held at the Jameson Combat Medic Training Center here March 4. The training provides simulated real-world training in an effort to prepare students for a real-world incident. The CLS course is a bridge between the self-aid/buddy-aid (first aid) training given to all Soldiers during basic training and the medical training given to an Army combat medic. CLS training is given to non-medical servicemembers providing them with life-saving skills. Once certified, combat lifesaver certified servicemembers are trained to provide immediate care, administer IV fluids to control shock, and perform needle chest decompression for a casualty with tension pneumothorax. A tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening condition that results from a progressive deterioration and worsening of a simple pneumothorax, collapsed lung. Gemmell is currently deployed here from Fort Irwin, Calif., and is a native of Alamogordo, N.M.
