Seaman William D. Henson, a machinist mate fireman and Warner Robins, Ga., native, carefully carries a torch down the walkway to light the boilers many levels below the ship's waterline in main propulsion forward, aboard amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4), May 12. The boiler takes 120,000 gallons of water everyday and converts it into steam. This steam produces power for the main engine that runs the ship. "We are turning thermal energy into mechanical energy to turn the main engine and propel the ship forward," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Sean J. Turner, machinist mate and main propulsion forward space supervisor with Boxer. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Boxer Amphibious Ready Group are currently on a deployment in support of regional and Maritime Security Operations.
