Petty Officer 2nd Class Allen R. Dixon, a Saginaw, Mich., native with USS Boxer (LHD 4), changes the brake switch from free-fall to normal which stops the ship's anchor chain in place. Other Sailors then are able to estimate how the 40,000-pound anchor will hit the ocean's floor before giving the command to drop the anchor another 90 feet. This continues until enough chain has been dropped to stop the 44,450-ton ship, which normally takes less than a minute after the anchor hits. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Boxer Amphibious Ready Group are currently on a deployment in support of regional and Maritime Security Operations.
