Petty Officer 2nd Class Allen R. Dixon, a boatswain's mate and Saginaw, Mich., native with USS Boxer (LHD 4), awaits the command to drop one of two 40,000-pound anchors which are each connected to 155,155-pound chains. After turning the brake switch, a machine called a "wildcat" begins turning and allowing the chain to lower into the water. It is turned off every 90 feet, so other Sailors are able to estimate the location of the anchor and approximate where it will hit the ocean floor. The process is continued until the ship has dropped enough chain to keep it in place. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Boxer Amphibious Ready Group are currently on a deployment in support of regional and Maritime Security Operations.
