150825-N-FO981-014 SAN DIEGO (Aug. 25, 2015) – Seaman Bismark Gbede sands the starboard accommodation ladder platform aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) in preparation for painting. America is currently moored at Naval Base San Diego and receiving upgrades while undergoing a post-shakedown availability (PSA). PSA is a period in which the ship’s crew and contractors make improvements to the ship’s design. Every new ship conducts a PSA that is designed to harness results of a thorough test and evaluation period and pave the way to operational employment.
