Sergeant Edwin A. Gonzales, senior drill instructor, Receiving Company, Support Battalion, instructs a recruit to respond louder during receiving at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Dec. 7. Recruits must respond to everything a drill instructor says to develop instant obedience to orders. During the recruits’ first hours of recruit training, they will get haircuts, receive their initial gear issue and be searched for any contraband. Today, all males recruited from west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Echo Company is scheduled to graduate March 4.
