Both men were assigned to Pearl Harbor when the base was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. Clinton is conducting a trip through the western Pacific to strengthen ties with our partner nations, which will involve stops in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea and Hawaii was her first stop where she met with Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada to discuss the movement of Marine Corps Futenma Air Base, the expansion of the Japan - U.S. security alliance, the war in Afghanistan and the nuclear programs in North Korea.
