PATUXENT RIVER, Md. (July 15, 2016) — George Schwarz (right), an underwater archaeologist with the Naval History and Heritage Command Underwater Archaeology Branch (UAB), and Silas Dean (left), an intern with UAB, signal they have encountered unknown material July 15 while surveying the Patuxent River. UAB surveyed areas of the river in search of Commodore Joshua Barney’s scuttled flotilla. During the War of 1812, Barney scuttled his flotilla to prevent it from falling into the hands of the British. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Eric Lockwood/Released)
