The 99th Flying Training Squadron is the Department of Defense’s sole provider for T-1A Jayhawk pilot instructor training. The squadron was formed during World War II as the first flying unit for African Americans known as the Tuskegee Airmen, and it was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, originally called the Distinguished Unit Citation, for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy.
