HOPE HULL, Ala. (Sept. 17, 2016) -- Command Sgt. Maj. Wiley P. Russell, the command sergeant major of the 122nd Troop Command, Alabama Army National Guard, delivers the unit colors to his commander, Col. Zachary E. Maner, during the change of command ceremony at Army Aviation Support Facility #1, Fort R. W. Shepherd Armory, here, today.
Russell, from Gulf Shores, Ala., is the senior enlisted member of the 122nd and the principal advisor to his commander, symbolized through his role as the keeper of the unit colors for the commander. Maner, from Mobile, Ala., the outgoing commander of the 122nd, receives the guidon bearing the colors and prepares to relinquish it to Maj. Gen. Charles Lynn Gable (far right), the Assistant Adjutant General of the Alabama Army National Guard. Col. Roger A. Presley, Jr. (facing Maner), the incoming commander of the 122nd, is prepared to then receive the colors from Gable, displaying the transfer of authority and responsibility for the 122nd held by the commander, from Maner to Presley, under the command direction of Gable. Maner now begins his next assignment as the Chief of Staff for the 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Alabama Army National Guard.
Attending the ceremony were more than 150 service members from within the 122nd, select members of the Alabama Army National Guard leadership and guests that included families and friends of service members participating in the ceremony. The 122nd has command and control of all of the aviation units in the Alabama Army National Guard.
