The Governer of Mississippi Phil Bryant, (center), along with members of the Patriot Guard Riders, render honors during the playing of Taps for Pfc. James Samuel Smith during his funeral held in his hometown of Liberty, Miss., Oct. 17, 2016. Smith was killed in action on Nov. 20, 1943 on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll during World War II. Marines from Marine Forces Reserve honored Smith with a three-round volley and presentation of a folded flag to his next of kin during the burial of his remains.
